The power of a deep, cleansing breath is well known – it powers down our automatic stress responses and helps us feel more grounded and alive.

What it is

Breathwork is the active form of consciously working your breath to bypass the mind and enter a different state of awareness. The practice gives the brain's executive functioning something to focus on. Breathwork allows us to disconnect from the mind and reconnect with our body and energy. From this elevated state of awareness, we are able to heal, grow, and expand.

There are many types of breathwork techniques, and each form has a unique purpose and create different results. Simple breathwork techniques help to reduce stress, increase focus and create greater self awareness.

“There are so many studies that show deep breathing is one easy, accessible practice that can help to balance the mind and body, and reduce the stress response,” says Mark Hyman, M.D., a 13-time New York Times best-selling author and the head of strategy and innovation at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine. “Breathwork has been shown to increase parasympathetic activity, heart rate variability, physiological flexibility, [and] is one of the greatest tools I have in my medical toolbox to help individuals manage stress, [which] has become an epidemic in our society.”.

'Breath is the bridge which connects life to consciousness, which unites your body to your thoughts. Whenever your mind becomes scattered, use your breath as the means to take hold of your mind again.'
